On 4 July 2023, at the conclusion of the Forum for Young Researchers II of CCE-NKUA, a participatory music activity takes place at the School of Philosophy. Participants from different programmes and members of the audience join a music-making process that begins without prior rehearsal.
Conventional musical instruments are combined with Scratch and micro:bit in an open improvisational activity. The music is shaped on the spot, with participants joining gradually and contributing through improvisation, interaction and collaborative music creation.
The open form of the activity depends on continuous listening and immediate response because the musical outcome is not predetermined. The group changes gradually as new participants join, and the music emerges from decisions made in the moment and from the coexistence of acoustic and digital media. Scratch and micro:bit broaden the available modes of participation and allow people with different levels of musical experience to enter the same improvisational process.
