The 2nd GSME Online Study Day, Back to School #music_for_all, takes place on 10 October 2021 and includes workshops with practical applications for the music classroom.
In the workshop “Creating Digital Musical Patterns with Physical Objects,” two original online virtual musical instruments are used. Participants create rhythmic and melodic patterns with physical objects, connecting physical interaction with the digital music environment and augmented-reality practices.
The activity examines how a physical object can acquire a digital musical function and become part of a rhythmic or melodic system. Interaction with real objects retains the embodied dimension of musical action, while the digital environment adds possibilities for transformation and feedback. The approach therefore connects experimentation with sound, movement and pattern creation. Participants can therefore observe directly how changes to a physical object affect a digital musical result and transfer this logic into improvisation and composition activities. This makes the activity suitable for exploring both musical structure and the relationship between physical action and digital representation.
