The article Using Artificial Intelligence Practices in Primary Music Education: Pedagogical Perspectives, STEAM Applications, Affordances, and Limitations was published in the Journal of Culture in Tourism, Art and Education at the University of Patras. The discussion focuses on concrete music-education applications of artificial intelligence rather than on a general technology-centred view.
The paper considers sound stories and audio programmes (podcasts) supported by language models, activities in music theory and history, interactive machine learning, digital musical instruments and immersive soundscapes. It also addresses authenticity, copyright, algorithmic transparency and the reliability of generated outputs. Artificial intelligence (AI) is discussed as a tool that can support inquiry, idea generation and musical experimentation without replacing teacher judgement or students’ creative decisions. The article consequently argues for a balanced approach to classroom use, with attention to age appropriateness, verification of generated material and the development of critical digital literacy. Pedagogical design and musical intention remain the primary criteria for deciding when and how AI tools should be used.
