The 12th Interdepartmental Musicological Conference takes place online from 27 to 29 November 2020, with presentations spanning different areas of musicological research.
Y. Mygdanis and I. Lerch-Kalavrytinou examine the method by J. C. Bach and F. P. Ricci as a characteristic example of late-eighteenth-century piano pedagogy. The presentation analyses its instructional content, the principles of instrumental teaching it reflects, and differences among its historical editions.
The study approaches the method not only as a historical document but also as evidence of ideas about technique, musical understanding and the gradual organisation of keyboard instruction. Comparing editions makes it possible to identify changes in content and in the presentation of teaching material. These differences illuminate broader developments in piano pedagogy and practice during the late eighteenth century. The study connects historical pedagogical sources with contemporary musicological research and helps situate teaching materials within changing ideas about instrumental technique and musical understanding over time.
