The programme of the 34th ISME World Conference includes a paper on designing a practice diary for instrumental and vocal teaching. The event had originally been scheduled for Helsinki but was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic; part of the programme moved online, while the related material was documented in the published proceedings.
“Designing a Practice Music Diary Book for Instrumental/Vocal Music Teaching and Learning” proposes a structured tool to support individual practice. The diary includes areas for listening, performance, musical creation, self-evaluation, technology and parental involvement.
The diary is designed to help learners organise practice and monitor not only practice time but also the types of musical activity undertaken. Recording goals, difficulties and reflective notes can support dialogue with the teacher and strengthen self-regulation. The proposal therefore broadens the meaning of practice beyond repeated work on repertoire. The tool is intended to make practice more visible to both learner and teacher and to support dialogue about goals, progress and the quality of individual study.
