The chapter Integrating STEAM Education Practices into Music Pedagogy: Towards Defining and Clarifying the Framework was published in The Music Classroom as a Laboratory for Creation and Experimentation: 17+1 STEAM Music-Education Scenarios by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Press. The chapter seeks to clarify the meaning of STEAM in music pedagogy and to identify theoretical and instructional principles that distinguish it from the simple coexistence of different subject areas.
Music is connected with science, technology, engineering and mathematics through authentic problems, creative experimentation and design processes. Maker culture, constructionism and design thinking provide key reference points, with creativity, collaboration, computational thinking and authentic assessment operating within a shared pedagogical framework. The chapter also considers prototyping, feedback and iterative refinement of student-made artefacts as part of the learning process itself. STEAM is therefore approached as a pedagogical framework that can transform the music classroom into a space for inquiry, design and creation rather than merely adding activities from other disciplines.
