The paper Maritime Music Project: Designing and Implementing an Innovative Teaching Proposal Drawing on Ubiquitous Acoustic Ecologies to Connect Music and Maritime Education, co-authored with I. Kalaitzidis, was published in the Proceedings of the 9th International Conference for the Promotion of Educational Innovation. The proposal connects music, the sea and maritime education through a STEAM framework informed by acoustic ecology.
The intervention was implemented with Grade 5–6 students at Pierce through experiential activities, group work, discovery learning and project-based learning. Results indicate active participation, development of musical and technological skills, and growth in creativity and ecological awareness. Maritime themes provide a common focus for listening, recording, sound processing and composition, allowing different subject areas to be connected through a concrete project. The intervention also demonstrates how environmental listening can become a starting point for creative musical action and for discussion of the relationship between people and their sonic environment, rather than remaining a purely observational activity.
