The paper Designing and implementing a STEAM proposal reflecting ubiquitous acoustic ecologies for connecting music and maritime was published in the Proceedings of the Music in Schools and Teacher Education Commission (MISTEC) of the International Society for Music Education (ISME). The publication presents a school-based scenario connecting acoustic ecologies, STEAM, musical creation and maritime themes.
The proposal was implemented with Grade 5–6 students at Pierce through experiential activity, collaboration, inquiry learning and project-based learning. Findings report active participation, development of musical and technological skills, and increased creativity and ecological awareness. The scenario turns the real sonic environment into learning material and invites students to observe, record, classify and transform sounds into musical resources. Connecting acoustic ecology with STEAM also enables students to explore relationships among musical creation, technology and environmental awareness. Listening therefore becomes a context for inquiry, composition and creative decision-making rather than only a receptive classroom activity in school.
