The paper Using Video Games in Music Teaching and Learning, co-authored with R. Saltari, was published in the Proceedings of the 3rd Panhellenic Conference “Educational Game and Art in Education and Culture” by EKEDISY. The publication connects music and sound in video games with activities in listening, analysis, performance and creation.
Proposed activities explore the role of music in shaping identity, plot, characters and spatiotemporal setting and extend to the design and construction of a video game through visual programming. Questions of age appropriateness and equitable access are also discussed so that video-game use remains grounded in a clear music-pedagogical framework. The paper uses many students’ familiarity with video games as a starting point for deeper listening and reflection on the function of music within a multimodal medium. Designing a simple game also shifts students from users to designers, requiring decisions about sound, music, narrative and interaction within a shared creative process.
