On 14 April 2021, an online workshop is organised by the LifeLong Music Engagement Research Unit of SoScieAtH at European University Cyprus, focusing on informal forms of music learning during the COVID-19 period. The activity centres on musical communication, collaboration and creation in distance-learning environments.
Co-facilitated by Y. Mygdanis and M. Papazachariou-Christoforou, participants use online tools for music production and collaborative creation. The activities transfer informal music-learning practices into digital environments and explore ways of making music together at a distance.
Activities seek to retain elements of informal musical practice, such as repertoire choice, peer learning and collaborative creation, under conditions of physical distance. Online environments are used to exchange ideas, sonic material and feedback. The experience shows how technology can support communities of music learning even when synchronous live participation is restricted. Collaboration is organised around shared musical projects and file exchange, allowing participants to comment on, extend and transform one another’s material.
