On 19 December 2021, an online workshop is organised by the LifeLong Music Engagement Research Unit of SoScieAtH at European University Cyprus, focusing on creative coding in music education. No prior programming experience is required, and code is used as a medium for music creation and experimentation.
With Sonic Pi, programming concepts are connected with pulse, rhythmic and melodic patterns, repetition, variation and timbre. Participants create musical sequences and experiment with synthesised sounds, samples and live coding.
Code is used with immediate audible results so that participants can change a parameter and hear its musical effect directly. This supports exploration of basic programming concepts through rhythmic and melodic problems. Live coding is introduced as a form of live musical creation connecting performance, improvisation and continuous revision of code. Participants can transform code in real time and hear how small changes generate new rhythmic, melodic or timbral versions of the same musical idea.
