The experiential professional development event “Marine Literacy and Education through the Creative Arts: The Mediterranean Example” takes place on 2 November 2024 at European University Cyprus. The programme examines how music, storytelling, and other creative arts can be used to approach the marine environment.

In the workshop “A Sea of Sounds,” recordings and sounds of the sea become starting points for listening, sonic experimentation, and musical composition. Through STEAM activities, the sound material is observed, processed, and transformed into musical actions, connecting marine literacy with creative listening and composition.

Environmental listening is approached as an active process of observation and selection through which participants identify features of the soundscape and transfer them into musical creation. Composition therefore becomes a way of processing experience of the marine environment. The workshop connects ecological awareness with creative expression and shows how a real environment can become material for music learning. Participants move from identifying sonic features to selecting, organising and transforming them, making the compositional process part of environmental inquiry.
