The preconference seminar of the ISME Music in Schools and Teacher Education Commission (MISTEC) takes place in Tallinn from 22 to 26 July 2024 and focuses on sustainability, resilience and contemporary challenges in music education.
The presentation introduces a STEAM proposal connecting music with the marine environment through the concept of ubiquitous acoustic ecologies. Environmental sounds, soundscape experiences and technological media are used in activities involving listening, inquiry and music creation, linking marine literacy with music learning.
The proposal uses the real sonic environment as a starting point for observation, recording and creative transformation, connecting environmental listening with concrete musical tasks. Maritime themes provide a shared context for interdisciplinary inquiry, allowing students to connect sound, place, technology and ecological awareness. Musical creation therefore becomes a way of understanding the environment and a starting point for discussing sustainability and learners’ relationships with place. This also places environmental listening within a broader educational discussion of responsibility and shared ecological awareness.
