Digital Vegan Orchestra takes place at the MUSIX Lab of the Athens Concert Hall from 5 November to 3 December 2023 and is designed for children aged 6–8. Fruit, cables, electronic circuits and computers are used as materials for experimenting with sound and building digital musical instruments.
Designed and facilitated by E. Perakaki and Y. Mygdanis, the workshop has children create their own instruments and explore different ways of triggering sound. The constructions are then brought together in a digital “fruit orchestra” through listening, improvisation and collaborative music-making activities.
The activity is organised around a progression from individual making to collective music-making. Each child experiments with different materials and ways of triggering sound, after which the individual constructions are combined within a shared musical ensemble. The process supports listening to others, coordination and an understanding of how different sonic sources can function together in an orchestra. The ensemble format also creates opportunities for turn-taking, listening across the group and collective decisions about how individual sounds contribute to a shared texture.
